FAQs

Feel free to contact us with any questions not listed here!

1. What is the maximum size frame that can fit in an S&S hard case?

We can fit up to a 64cm with the crank removed. Larger bikes may have to break down into more pieces.

2. What should I know about packing a mountain bike?

Some suspension forks may need to go in a separate bag, and 29” tires have to come off the rim.

3.What materials can we retrofit?

We can retrofit steel and titanium. When it becomes possible to retrofit aluminum and carbon fiber, we’ll let you know!

4. What is the difference between the hard case and back pack case?

The hard case offers more protection for your frame but the backpack case can fold up when empty and is easier to pack. Both have the same airline legal dimensions of 26” x 10” x 26”.

5. Can we retrofit tubing that is not completely round?

Yes, but there may be an upcharge depending on how much work is involved. Shims can be added, and in the case of very unusual tubing, like the flat bottom tube found on some tandems, we can replace the tube completely.

6. Can we retrofit tandems and recumbents?

We can retrofit tandems and select recumbants. We can’t retrofit recumbents that are single tube design.

7. What kind of grease should I use on my couplers?

Only use Dupont Teflon bearing grease.

8. How often do I need to grease the couplers?

Twice a year, unless you are riding in dirty, wet conditions. In that case you should clean and lube the couplers once a month (as well as the rest of your bike!)

9. How much weight do couplers add to my bike?

    Approximately 8oz.

10. Will retrofitting my bike compromise the quality of my ride?

Absolutely not. The couplers are stronger than the original tubing, and do not change the feel of the ride at all.

11. What are cable disconnects and can I install them myself?

They allow the brake and gear cables to be split in two. It is as simple as installing a new cable on your bike. Feel free to call us if you get stuck.

12. How long will the retrofit take?

4-6 weeks for the retrofit and paint. If you aren’t getting paint it can be turned around in a little over a week. We can work with you if you have a trip coming up or a tight deadline.

13. How does the retrofit affect my bike’s warranty?

Having your bike retrofitted usually voids the manufacturer’s warranty.

14. Does Bilenky offer a warranty?

We offer a 10 year warranty on the couplers and our work.

15. Can we add braze-ons or move them in the process?

Yes, we can add water bottle bosses, rack braze-ons and any other repairs etc. during the process for an added charge. Call for quote.

16. Can we respace or re-alighn the bike during the process?

Yes, alignment is included in the retrofit price so spacing can be modified at the same time.

17. If I need a part or component upgrade can I do this with you at the same time?

Absolutely. We can replace one single part to a complete groupo.

18. Can you retrofit bikes with internal cable guides?

Yes, we fill the internal cable guide holes and braze-on external cable stops.
