S and S Security Net now available...........

The following letter should be of interest to all current (and travelling!) owners of S & S coupled bikes, from Steve Smilanick of S and S Machine in Roseville, CA in October of 2004 -

Over the past several months, it has been reports to us (S and S) that some bike cases have been opened for inspection by the TSA (Transportation Security Administration).  Some of those cases were inspected and closed without incident.  Some had items repositioned in a way that could have resulted in damage to the bike.  After some of the inspections, the compression members were just thrown in the bottom of the case where they do no good at all.  The people reporting those inspections to us were concerned that their efforts to carefully pack their bikes were being thwarted by the TSA and many were fearful that their bike would be damaged as a result of the re-packing job done by TSA.

In response to that problem, we have developed a "security net" that holds everything together, prevents the compression members from coming apart and allows the case contents to be viewed without removing the net.  In many situations, the whole bike can be lifted out of the case for inspection without disturbing the packing job.  For photos and more details, go to S and S Machine's great website.

We can add to your bike or retrofit order for $35 - if you already have an S & S bike then we can drop one in the mail for $38.50 - call with a credit card # or send us a check, and we'll get it right out!  Mail, Fax, Phone, GPS.

Mayors' Ride 2004

Starting from big cities in all four corners of the US, with the blessings of the mayors in each of these municipalities, relay teams of National Bicycle Greenway (NBG) cyclists, as they moved across America, collected support from the leaders of 42 large population centers. As these bicycle adventurers passed through supporting NBG Day cities, they received proclamations in ceremonies ranging from fifteen minute certificate presentations to media extravaganzas that included police escorts, newspaper, TV and radio interviews and hordes of photographers. Some also saw displays and public speaking that celebrated advancements in the local two wheel way of life. All this energy converged on Chicago, IL on July 30 2004.  You can read more about NBG here, along with the stories of some of the individuals (including our own Larry Burns- Philly to Baltimore; and Montana Norvel - New York to Philly) that rode the route last summer..

 Chance Meeting
"What are the odds of having 2 Bilenky Midlands on the same train from Vienna to Munich?  They are not zero.  Pam and I met Joe from Chicago.  We were all loading our bikes into the bike car and I saw his green bike with the distinctive signature.  he was very happy with his bike.  Attached is a picture of Pam and Joe on the platform in Munich:"  (Dan Blumenthal, 8/04)

Bicycle Commuter Act Introduced In U.S. Senate

MAY 30, 2003 -- WASHINGTON, DC (BRAIN)--Senators Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) introduced legislation in the U.S. Senate last week that would include bike commuters in the tax code transportation fringe benefit.  The transportation fringe benefit was added to the tax code as an incentive to get more people commuting in ways other than single-occupancy cars. The transportation fringe benefit's intent was to reduce traffic congestion, pollution and wear and tear on the roads, said Mele Williams, director of government relations for the League of American Bicyclists.

The Bicycle Commuter Act, S. 1093, would allow an employer to offer a monthly cash reimbursement to an employee who commutes to work by bicycle, providing a tax benefit to the employer and helping defray commuting expenses for the bicyclist.

For the past decade, the East Coast Greenway Alliance has been chipping away at its vision of creating a 2,600-mile, traffic-free pathway running from Maine to Florida.  Their East Coast Greenway, which they call "an urban alternative to the highly popular Appalachian Trail," is now about 20 percent complete, and they're hosting an official inauguration of the route early this summer in Washington, D.C.  Events begin on June 5 and culminate two days later on the 7th, which is National Trails Day.
